FRANCE: lingerie market statistics analyzed


AGAIN in 2013, the value of the French market for lingerie rose against the preceding year, albeit by a modest 1.4 per cent to EUR 2.7bn. The average per capita spend on lingerie rose to EUR 99.40, making French women again the leading consumers of lingerie in Europe. Women in the 15-24 age group were the most lavish spenders, with an average annual budget of EUR 135, closely followed by the 45-54 age group with EUR 132, up by EUR 19. Average spend by 35-44 year-olds rose by EUR 22.60 to EUR 119. Volume distributors retained a market share of 22 per cent while specialized chains raised their share to over 19 per cent. Online sales also rose, accounting for nearly 13 per cent of all sales.




The higher spending by women in the 35-44 age group, at a time when child-rearing makes an increasing demand on financial resources, suggests keener awareness of the importance of innerwear.
