PRESTIGIOUS Spanish bodywear brand Andrés Sardá, that was acquired by Van de Velde in 2008, said that, following current negotiations with a local partner, it expects to start selling its collection of swimwear and lingerie in the Middle East before the end of 2015. The brand also opened its first retail store in Spain. The 45m2 store in a prime Barcelona location is expected to attract international visitors to the city as well as more affluent local consumers. At present, however, the opening of other boutiques in Spain is not envisaged. Exports, mainly to France, Belgium, Germany and the USA, account for 70 per cent of the brand’s sales, largely through chains and concessions operated by its parent company.
For much of the time since its acquisition, the brand has been a drag on results of Van de Velde but these developments reflect the extent of the efforts being made to restore profitability.
