Summary of news published since Week 06-2016

jpa4Sibil220THE DECISION taken by Praedium Group to suspend production of nylon yarn at the Nylstar plant reflects the price pressure being applied to European and Mediterranean producers of branded nylon yarns by Asian suppliers of unbranded yarns. On the one hand, because nylon is an essential component of many items of intimate apparel, the pressure on yarn prices will reduce production costs of most items of lingerie and corsetry. On the other hand, by exposing suppliers of branded yarns to keener price competition, the current trend threatens to curtail their R&D budgets, and thus to limit their capacity to develop new products that provide improved performance and greater added value. While yarn and fabric processors as well as manufacturers of intimate apparel can opt either to reduce their prices or to invest in the development of better products, it is the consumer who, through his or her purchasing decisions, will determine which option is the correct one. But, to ensure that consumers make adequately informed buying decisions, they need to know more about the performance they can expect from the products they buy. That is the challenge facing all brands in today’s markets.
