Issue Week 23-2015

Summary of news published in Week 22-2014

jpa4Sibil220THE MORE positive consumption trend in the UK reported upon in this issue might encourage foreign bodywear brands to invest more to raise their market share there. At this time, however, any investment made to boost wholesale business in the UK market represents a risk. Until the promised referendum on the country’s EU membership is organized in 2017, uncertainty about the country’s future economic prospects could well slow, or even reverse. Further, in the not impossible event of British people voting for withdrawal, or for an unacceptable revision of membership terms, the country’s imports from all sources are likely to slump markedly. This will follow a probable decline in economic growth coupled with a substantial drop in the exchange value of the GBP. Under such conditions, exporters of innerwear and swimwear to the UK will face exceptionally strong competition from local brands. Right now, the negotiation by foreign brands of a licensing agreement with a local private label manufacturer could prove a safer option than investing in efforts to boost wholesale business in the UK.
