Issue Week 38-2015
Summary of news published in Week 37-2015
THE MOVE into retail by leading French lingerie brand Simone Pérèle underlines the extent to which the growth of rival distribution channels has caused the number of independent specialists and smaller lingerie chains to shrink in Europe and North America during recent years. Once attributed solely to the growth of specialised chains, the shrinkage has been much accelerated by the increasingly larger market share of online stores. While this evolution has caused problems for independent retailers and small chains, it has proved both a challenge and an opportunity for brands generally. A challenge because it has undermined the validity of traditional distribution channels and allowed start-ups to market their products at least cost, thus creating a more competitive market place. An opportunity because e-commerce platforms allow even small brands to achieve broader distribution at less cost than is called for by a wholesale operation. Exploited optimally, the right mix of wholesale and digital channels can allow brands to grow faster over a broader geographical area than ever before. The winners of tomorrow are those that make the most of current opportunities.
