Summary of news published during Week 49-2014

jpa4Sibil220FEATURED in this week’s issue, the news that an Australian swimwear company has been acquired by the private equity arm of an international luxury group poses a number of questions. The stated objective of the acquisition is to develop the swimwear label into a lifestyle brand, but will this be achieved at the brand’s current upper medium price points? If so, how can the new owner’s valuable marketing expertise in the luxury sector be applied to the attainment of the objective? If not, how can the existing distribution network be retained when the brand is re-positioned in a luxury price bracket. And finally, why acquire a swimwear business at all when any one, or several, of the many prestigious fashion brands in the LVMH stable could be developed at relatively little cost into a lifestyle brand that includes beachwear? No doubt, time will provide answers to these questions and a new strategy will be revealed.
