ITALY: exports of bodywear and legwear rise 4 per cent
ALTHOUGH volume declined by 7.3 per cent, the value of Italian exports of innerwear, hosiery and swimwear in 2013 rose by 4 per cent to reach EUR 1.991bn. According to figures released by Sistema Moda Italia (Smi), the value of hosiery exports declined by 4.7 per cent but exports of women’s lingerie rose by 9 per cent in value and by 6.9 per cent in volume. As regards men’s underwear, exports contracted by 31.4 per cent in volume but rose by 7.7 per cent in value while swimwear sales rose by 20.3 per cent in value and 13.9 per cent in volume. France, Germany and Spain were cited as major export markets.
The higher values despite slower volume growth indicate stronger world demand for more expensive Italian merchandise.
