JBS TEXTILE: CR7 range faces US trademark problem

WHEN the announcement was made by JBS Textile Group that it intended to market in the US the CR7 underwear collection endorsed by football star Ronaldo, the company petitioned the US Patent Office to cancel a Rhode Island man’s ownership of the CR7 brand. The man, Christopher Renzi, went to court to obtain confirmation of his claimed rights. As a result, the US launch by JBS of the CR7 collection has been put on hold pending a court decision.

The growing popularity of soccer in the US has raised considerably the sales potential of the CR7 collection there and the time-consuming lawsuits are causing JBS the loss of valuable sales opportunities.
