LENZING: volume of fibre sales continues to rise

REPORTING on the first nine months of its current fiscal year, cellulosic fibre specialist Lenzing noted that the average fibre selling price during the period had declined by 10.4 per cent to EUR 1.55/kg, against an average of EUR 1.73/kg in the same period a year earlier. As a result, although volume sales rose again, by 7 per cent to 706’900 tons in the reporting quarter, income from fibre sales dipped by 3.1 per cent in the first three quarters of the year, to EUR 1.28bn. Thanks to cost reduction measures and favourable exchange rate trends, Lenzing was able to reduce its net loss in the reporting quarter to EUR 16.3m from EUR 19.1m a year earlier.

Because the average fibre price quoted reflects mainly the weak price of standard viscose fibre, profitability should improve when the proportion of speciality fibres sold begins to rise significantly following the start-up at the end of July of the jumbo Tencel plant in Lenzing.
