UNDER the label Awraswim, French start-up Rajoul has launched swimwear that allows Muslim men to keep under cover the area from navel to below the knees as prescribed by the religion. The concept was developed by three friends who noted the absence of purpose-designed swimwear while on holiday in Dubai. The two-part garment includes a close-fitting first layer that provides the coverage and an outer part styled like boardshorts. Production was launched after one year of market research that confirmed potential demand for such a swimsuit.
Since design concepts cannot be patented, the Awraswim product is likely to be widely copied if commercially successful, as was the original burkini.
