SPAIN: retail sales returned to growth in August

ACCORDING to figures published by the ICM, that monitors retail sales in Spain, stores selling apparel and accessories raised their turnover by 1.2 per cent in August, recovering from the 0.2 per cent decline recorded in July. Smaller chains (+2 per cent) performed best and large surface stores raised their sales by 0.2 per cent, but single outlet stores suffered a 3.3 per cent decline in sales and major chains saw their sales slip by 1 per cent.

While the figures suggest that the consumption revival is being maintained with modest gains, the poor performance of single stores, many of which are in resort towns, could be an indication that purchases by tourists made no significant contribution to the higher turnover.
