USA: lingerie sales gather strength

A REPORT from the Credit Suisse bank in the US noted that intimate apparel there has been winning sales from the handbag category, which is seen as a comparable affordable luxury sector. Over the past two years, sales of intimates rose by more than 6 per cent and are expected to rise by 6.6 per cent in 2016 and more than 7 per cent in 2017. Earlier, L Brands, which operates the Victoria’s Secret lingerie chain, had said that trade in December 2015 had made the month its best ever holiday period with same store sales increasing by 8 per cent.

Although local labels are likely to benefit most from the positive trend, the stronger demand is also creating new opportunities for imported brands of intimates.
