HEALTH: tests reveal swimsuits cause health hazards
TESTS carried out by the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau on 32 swimsuits from 31 manufacturers showed that eight of the suits failed to meet quality standards. Besides inadequate colour fastness, which can be linked to skin problems, shown by some garments, one children’s swimsuit made byShanghai Decente Business Co. Ltd under the Arena brand contained a quantity of formaldehyde that reached 80mg per kilo, four times the national standard. The manufacturers concerned have been told to make the necessary improvements.
The good news is that a few years ago, such hazardous products would not even have been identified. Now, local and national authorities are at least attempting to prevent manufacturers from producing potentially dangerous garments.
