Summary of news published during Week 45-2014

jpa4Sibil220THE FINDINGS of the Boston Consulting Group survey on the repatriation of production capacity sourced offshore, which are presented in this issue, are probably less applicable to the intimate apparel sector than they are to outerwear. While the total costs and benefits of producing easily made items of innerwear in rich countries could possibly justify repatriation of production, the high labour cost of producing bras could well support a decision to continue sourcing their production offshore. It is very probable that the competitiveness and margins of such labels as Victoria’s Secret would be much reduced if it repatriated all of its production, assuming that US producers with adequate capacity could be found. Likewise, the failure of a number of European brands that resisted the trend to source production offshore provides reasons to beware of repatriation. In the circumstances, the best strategy is neither to source offshore nor to repatriate all of intimate apparel production but to review supply chain costs and advantages for each type of garment in each price category, bearing in mind the public relations benefits of domestic production. Only then can the relative advantages of offshore sourcing and domestic production be exploited most profitably.
