jpa4Sibil220THE REPORTED success of the Maison Lejaby Couture operation provides further evidence of the increasing polarization of the innerwear scene in richer countries. At the luxury end, this operation, together with other customization and personalization services as well as start-ups using the Web to launch hand-made collections in expensive fabrics, confirms that more affluent consumers are prepared to pay premium prices for exclusive innerwear. At the other extreme, volume distributors, long market leaders in men’s underwear, have recognized the huge volume of the market for women’s lingerie and intensified their efforts to provide attractive designs at highly competitive prices. In response, brands and private labels in the medium price sector are obliged to move in two directions ate the same time: they need to control costs ever more effectively while offering more innovative designs and better performance. If consumers respond as expected, by selecting their innerwear as carefully as they select their outerwear, the world market for lingerie should continue to expand for many years.
